“When Women Succeed, America Succeeds”

On the heels of President Obama’s shout out, recognizing women deserve equal pay for equal work,* (ah-thanks!) the dean of the Harvard Business School, Nitin Nohria, made an extraordinary public apology on Monday in San Francisco for his school’s past behavior toward women.** Dean Nohria acknowledged mistreatment or female students and professors felt ‘mistreated’, conceding women were owed better. (ah-thanks again!)

“When women succeed, America succeeds,” said President Barack Obama; and, Dean Nohria  “pledged to more than double the percentage of women who are protagonists in Harvard case studies over the next five years, to 20% (currently at 9%).”

While the President offered up two very true statements, there was no mention of how this situation is going to be fixed.  And HBS, Dean Nohria, pledged to change the system; but, as of now it’s a lot of lip service, stating a problem we already knew existed. Listen, I’m not beating either one for coming to the ‘rescue’ of women; but, we don’t need rescued, we need solutions.

Not only do employees have to try and successfully thrive in a world where aSociopathic Business Model ™*** is at play, we add to that further still with racism and sexism Claims from the EEOC to support*:

38.1%             Retaliation Claims

33.7%             Race Claims

30.5%             Sex Claims

These are usually soft numbers, in that many people have experienced the same type of abuse but chose not to report it because they were intimidated or feared retaliation.

Women make $.77 to every dollar a man makes, and gap is even worse for African American and Hispanic women*****.  This isn’t a recent revelation, it is an offensive one.  The latest data is almost a year old, so in a year (not to mention the 100 other years of gender and race inequality prior), the Administration only felt it relevant to state the obvious.

If a Company is willing to overlook or act dismissively towards race and gender, they are likely to be willing to engage in far greater illegal activity, which is why the Sociopathic Business Model is so prevalent in American business today. We need solutions and follow through from our government and our employers.
